Now that the soap opera of lockout and negotiations have ended, basketball fans can ramp up their excitement for the coming season.  The beginning of another sports season means renewed hope of a championship…for a while at least.

To help the city get into the spirit, the Cavaliers played their annual Wine & Gold Game on Sunday.  The scrimmage/pep rally/fan appreciation event let the fans get their first taste of the 2011-2012 team.

And the team did not skimp, treating the event as if it were a regular season game.  Player introductions with laser lights and flames, dance team numbers, fan giveaways…all the works.

Those in attendance also got to see the new kids, both Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson putting up good numbers in the game.

Speaking of attendance and good numbers, the fans really responded.  According to the Cavs site, over 7,000 attended the free event.  As Byron Scott said when addressing the crowd, there were more Cavs fans at the Q to see an in-squad game than there were Pistons fans at the pre-season game between the two teams in Detroit.

Due to my limited basketball knowledge, I defer all season predictions to Derek.  But as with the Indians, the rebuilding phase offers opportunities for excitement.  Nobody expects this team to go to the finals, so let’s see what they can do.  And it all starts next Monday.
